Tales from the Continuum Post

SLOT: TALESMODE: RECEIVINGLUME: steady

The Continuum Chronicle · Records Division · Continuum Post

Parcels have begun arriving at the ABQ Terminus, General Delivery — chapter by chapter, by well, from a Loom-born archivist called Filament, Ninth Thread of the Records Division, who is writing an official-unofficial history of the nine worlds for readers on this side of the vortex. The Department of Architecture publishes each dispatch as received.

Per natural law, each parcel carries one stowaway — a small detail no one packed. Do not look for it. It will find you.

DISPATCHES, IN ORDER OF ARRIVAL
PARCEL 01

Chapter One — The Census of Nine

Your astronomers count spheres. The Post counts addresses — and finds nine.

Stowaway: one pressed wick-moth wing, Nocturne postage, uncancelled.

PARCEL 02

Chapter Two — The Walk from Noon to Midnight

Route One, the only postal route you can walk: noon is a district, midnight is a nation, dusk is a road.

Stowaway: one frost-etching of a table set crosswise on a road, unmelted.

PARCEL 03

Chapter Three — The Unbirthday Problem

You cannot schedule a guest who steers by breathing. The Office keeps the light on.

Stowaway: one paper crown folded from a withdrawn timetable; departure column reads SOON.

PARCEL 04

Chapter Four — The Interview

Three days with Bindle, Housecat Emeritus, who answered no questions and demonstrated everything.

Stowaway: one cat-shaped warm spot on the wrapping. Still warm now, if you check.

PARCEL 05

Chapter Five — The Oldest Sentence

The belt is not a wall. Wallspeak is a letter, in transit, address first: TO WHOM IT FINDS —

Stowaway: one comma from the first sentence, on loan. You are being paused at, not ended at.

PARCEL 06

Chapter Six — The First Reader

The Kettle has already read everything ever warmed by its light. The Spout exists so it is occasionally written to.

Stowaway: one letter of introduction, addressed for you to your own star. Delivered when dry.

PARCEL 07 · IN TRANSIT

The Oracle

A hand keeps appearing in the Waiting Well’s ledger — not a clerk’s hand, and older than the ledger’s pages. Filament has been assigned to find out whose. The Oracle, she is told, already knows she is coming.
